Headlamp Motor Assembly
Now I’ve moved the work inside, I’ve started work on a couple of different bits. The first parts to get my attention were the headlamp lift motors and the wiper motor. The wiper motor is waiting on a couple of parts, but I’ve got one of the headlamp motor assemblies done now (I decided to do them one at a time so I could use the other as a template in case I forgot how it went together). The start – Functional but seriously grotty: The motor assembly: Motor body parts after cleaning, stripping and painting: It probably wasn’t needed, but I decided to replace the motor brushes while I was there: I also replaced all the wiring – on inspection, it was starting to corrode, even a little way up the insulation. So it all got replaced with some nice modern thin-wall cable, and the connector was replaced with … Read More
Rear end parts
Now the underside is done, I’ve started work on the other parts – first up was the bumper, which is a bit rusty, but solid enough. The bumper cover is cracked from some long ago accident, so that’s scrap: And the mountings are rusted and siezed, so they’ll all need replacing: The actual bumper mounting studs all need replacing, which is a problem as they don’t seem to be available. Looks like I’ll have to dig out my tap & die set and fabricate some. I’ve now rubbed down all the rust, and now it just needs a good clean and it’s ready for painting: I also turned my attention to the axle, specifically the brackets and back plate. The bump stop brackets were a rusty mess, so I derusted them by electrolysis. I like this method, it does a good job with minimal effort! The backplate was a different … Read More
Power Supply
As mentioned in an earlier post, I had plans to build a bench power supply out of an old computer PSU. After a bit of faffing about, I got it done today: As you can see, the case is a little bit ‘ghetto’, but it gets the job done. I won’t go into how it’s done as there’s plenty of instructions on the web (just google for ‘atx bench power supply’ or somesuch), but it’s fairly simple to do, and it only cost me about a tenner, plus the PSU itself (ripped out of an old PC case). It gives a steady 12v (there’s 5v and 3.3v as well, should you need) – I’m not sure on what sort of load it can handle (I’d estimate about 30A), but it should be plenty enough for pretty much anything I’ll be testing on it. I’m happy with it!
Yeah, I know…
….it’s been a while. In my defence, I’ve been extremely busy of late, what with one thing and another – and what with the cold weather and dark evenings, I just haven’t had any time to devote to the car. However, I’m back on the case now, and ready to get started again. The last time I did any work on the car, I’d got to the point where most of the paint under the car had been removed. Obviously, it’s not ideal to leave a car stripped to bare metal in a cold garage over winter, but fortunately the car doesn’t seem to have been affected too much – a light coating of surface rust in a few places, nothing that can’t be rubbed down in a couple of hours. One of the other reasons I halted the work was because I’d got to the point where I needed … Read More
