Getting Ready for Winter
As you might have noticed, I haven’t updated here for a little while. As tends to happen, other plans and projects mean that I just haven’t been able to get down to the car recently. As it’s now starting to get colder and the days are getting shorter, I’ve decided it’s time to pack up for the winter. So over the weekend we went down to the garage, I spent a bit of time welding the wheelarch on (It’s taken me a while to fit properly, the shape and fit of the pressing is awful and needed a lot of beating into shape). Done now though: The only thing remaining is to paint the arch and wing, then that’s it for the winter. I also (A couple of weeks ago) stripped and painted the o/s headlamp recess, that’s ready for final painting now: The car is slowly starting to turn … Read More
Battery Tray & Wing
Not a lot of blogging recently, the weather has been hampering any serious attempts to work! I have managed to get a bit done though. The windscreen frame is slowly taking final shape. I’ve got it nearly there, just a few last small ripples to get out. Work moved on to the battery tray, it was in basically solid shape but needed a good tidy up: So I ground off all the surface rust, acid etched both parts and welded on some new metal after I mangled the bit where it connects to the bulkhead: Then it was time to clean up the engine bay area: A lot of that couldn’t be reached with any power tool in my collection so there was a whole lot of rubbing down done by hand. I’m happy with the end result though. A bit of priming and seam sealing: The seam sealer ended … Read More
Wings & Doors
The stripping down continued this week; to start with, the doors came out earlier on this week. No problems to report, except discovering the top hinge on the passenger door was close to falling off! There’s two pins in the hinge, the lower one was missing altogether and the top one was sticking halfway out. I’d seen the top pin but assumed it went all the way through so just thought it not sat in all the way. Good job it never came all the way out while I had the car operational – that could have been embarrassing! The drivers door is a bit rusty along the bottom; while new doors are available they’re expensive so I think I’ll get a new skin and repair panel and repair this one. The passenger door is in great shape. The doors are stripped out and stored in the back of the … Read More
Interior Stripping And More Filler Bodges
After the mess of the windscreen surround, I carried on the other day with stripping out the rest of the wiring and the last of the interior. The loom is all out now, each connection labelled and the whole lot is sat in a box waiting for my attention later on in the year. There’s a few mystery wires in there, some obviously added by a PO, some original – I have no idea where they’re supposed to go, although they weren’t connected to anything so probably nothing (too) important. Given the age and condition of the loom, as well as the prevalence of scotchloks (and worse!), I’ll be making up a new one in time. I did look into having one made but that’s a lot of money, plus there’s a few modifications I want to do, so I’ll be doing that myself. The pedals, heater box and steering … Read More
